The Parkside Foundation provides a wide range of flexible leisure and recreational services for people with intellectual disabilities in the greater Hobart area. Activities such as Horse Riding, Computer Skills, Art and Craft are provided in a variety of settings.
Centre Based Services
At our Tower Road centre we employ a number of professional tutors to teach and lead activities such as music, art, photography, tie dying, massage, hydroponics, literacy, felt making, woodwork and gardening. Our program of activities change three times a year to ensure variety and enable us to take advantage of seasonal changes. There are generally four choices of activities each morning and afternoon. The centre operates from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm.
Derwent Park House
Derwent Park House site is our main arts centre. We offer activities including felt making, ceramics, photography and screen printing. Derwent Park House is an historic property which has been wonderfully restored. It is made available to Parkside by Nyrstar as part of a community partnership.
Community Based Activities
A wide range of community based recreation and leisure options are available. These include assisting individuals or small groups with activities such as:
- Shopping
- Swimming
- Visiting the library
- Horseriding
- Accessing community houses
- Accessing on-line centres
- Tennis
- Ten pin bowling
Parkside runs activities for a small group of residents of the Huon Valley on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Home Based Support
Some people's needs are best met by a home based recreation service. Parkside provides an in-home program recreation service for people living in rural areas and to some people with high support needs. Using a person's own home as a base, support wokers assist people with disabilities to access their local community. Some clients use a mixture of home based and centre based services.
Llanherne Cottage
Llanherne Cottage is located in Cambridge near the Hobart Airport. The house provides an ideal venue for people to develop a range of practical life skills and pre-vocational skills such as preparation of meals, personal hygiene, grooming, laundering, gardening and cleaning.
The house has been made available to The Parkside Foundation by Hobart International Airport as part of a community partnership with the assistance of Kangaroo Bay Rotary Club.
Lindisfarne Primary Canteen
The canteen at Lindisfarne Primary School has been operated by a small group of people with disabilities since 2001. The school had been having difficulties in running the canteen and Parkside was looking for a meaningful and valued role for some of the younger clients that would enable them to learn some pre-work skills and engage and interact with another section of the community. The canteen offered the ideal opportunity.
The canteen offers a valued service with many students (and parents) welcoming the opportunity to buy lunch. It also provides an opportunity to break down barriers and the young students appreciate the valued role that people with disabilities play in the school community.
Eligibility for Community Access
This service is targeted to people with disabilities. In order to access this service, people need to receive funding from the Department of Health and Human Services Disability Services.
Fees
A small daily attendance fee is charged.
